Piedmont Columbus Regional’s Northside Campus is expanding services to meet the growing needs for high quality and convenient emergency care with the opening of a new emergency department on April 16. The ribbon cutting was held at 11 a.m. and the first patients were seen at noon.
The new emergency department features 10 patient rooms, which include behavioral health rooms plus flexible use space to optimize patient flow.
In most cases, patients who frequent the Northside Emergency Department will be treated at Northside unless the service or resources are not reasonably available. With that said, certain patients once stabilized may be transferred to Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown Campus for conditions such as but not limited to a heart attack, stroke or a child that requires admission to the Children’s Hospital.
The new 12,000 square foot emergency department will be staffed with board-certified emergency room physicians 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and a midlevel will be staffed in the emergency room from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. In addition to the emergency room providers, there will be pharmacy coverage 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Dr. Darius Brown will serve as the Emergency Department Medical Director. Dr. Brown has been a full-time Emergency Department physician at our Midtown facility and comes to Northside with a wealth of experience and knowledge regarding Emergency Medicine. Heather Yepez, RN, BSN is the Emergency Department Manager for Northside. Heather is an experienced Emergency Department nurse and leader and we are fortunate to have her on the team.
Planning for this department began in February 2017 and construction began on the emergency department in May 2017. The new emergency department will be state of the art and will incorporate new technologies to make the department efficient and allow the care team to provide exceptional care to all patients seeking emergency care in North Columbus. We are very excited about the design of the emergency department that incorporates the beauty of the Northside campus with a natural feel and a generous dose of natural light in the space.
The entire organization has been working tirelessly to prepare for the new emergency department with multiple departments and service lines working together over the last year to ensure that everything will be ready to treat the first patient. This includes new laboratory tests being added all the way to preparations being made to admit patients from the emergency department to the inpatient setting at the Northside Campus.
Northside ED staff underwent vigorous training and patient simulation exercises the week before the ED's opening to be prepared when the first patient walks through the doors of the ED.
We are fortunate to be adding this new service at our Northside Campus and expanding care for our patients and community. Everyone has been working extremely hard to prepare and it is greatly appreciated. We have a great team and we'd like to thank our employees for making Piedmont Columbus Regional so successful!
