Welcome to summer! It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the summer season can sneak up on us. For Columbus Regional Health, May was a very busy month. So busy, in fact, that it is hard to keep track of all the great news and events we experienced in our health system. Here is a quick rundown:
On May 8, Northside Medical Center (NMC) was notified that they had achieved a Double Five Star Ranking from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This makes NMC one of only 19 hospitals in the nation to achieve this rating. It is truly a testament to all of the hard work and effort each team member from NMC puts into delivering a high quality, high touch patient experience.
On May 9, Forbes magazine informed us we were on their list of best “midsized” employers in the United States. Ranking No.136, this is the second year in a row we have been ranked as one of “America’s Best Midsize Employers.” This speaks volumes about the work that all of our employees are undertaking to create a positive, employee-centered and patient-centered culture at CRH. While we know we still have areas for improvement, this really is quite an honor, and we look forward to continuing our focus and building on the positive aspects of our organization.
On May 17, we held our annual spring physician recognition social. We handed out service awards and honored our Physician Clinicians, Educator and Leader of the Year. This was a great event and wonderful opportunity for us to recognize all of our physician partners who give so much of themselves to enable our success.
On May 19, we held the groundbreaking ceremony for the new emergency department at NMC. This new ED will bring essential services closer to the residents of North Columbus and Harris County and will transform health care not only for NMC but for our entire service area. We know this project will bring big changes to NMC but we are up for the task. We are excited and optimistic about the new ED and what it can bring to our patients, our community and our health system.
From May 8-12 we celebrated another fantastic, fun filled Employee Appreciation Week and followed that up with another excellent Nurses Week celebration from May 15-19. What a great month!
Not to have the exciting news end there, it was announced May 9 that, after a year-long evaluation of the future strategic direction for CRH, we would to enter into exclusive discussions to pursue a strategic partnership with Piedmont Healthcare. We signed a letter of intent (LOI) to begin that period of exclusivity. Piedmont Healthcare is a nonprofit health system with seven hospitals, over 100 physician practice locations and over 1,600 clinically integrated physicians throughout Georgia. We are excited about the possibilities this partnership can bring to you as employees, to our patients, to our medical staff and, most importantly, to our community! During the next several months, our systems will negotiate a final or “definitive agreement” to spell out the terms of the partnership, and this will happen at the same time Piedmont conducts a period of “due diligence.”
Some of you may ask, “what is due diligence?” It is a process where we share a significant amount of data and information about CRH with Piedmont so they can get to know us better and understand how CRH functions on a day to day basis. Once this period of due diligence is complete and we have negotiated the definitive agreement, we will then seek approval from the appropriate regulatory agencies. This process will take time, potentially anywhere from six to 12 months.
I encourage all of you to share the exciting news and announcements about CRH with your family, friends and neighbors. Have a great summer everyone!
