Bariatric surgery (weight-loss surgery) can help resolve numerous weight-related medical conditions. The bariatric surgery program at the Minimally Invasive Surgical Institute is led by Paul Cartwright, M.D., the only surgeon in the area with triple-accreditation in bariatric surgery, minimally invasive surgery and therapeutic endoscopy. When continued efforts of diet and exercise do not result in significant weight loss, bariatric surgery may be an option for individuals meeting the following criteria:

  • Body mass index (BMI) greater than 40, or
  • BMI of 35 with at least one of the following weight-related medical conditions:
    • Diabetes (Type 1 or 2)
    • Obstructive sleep apnea
    • Degenerative joint disease
    • High blood pressure
    • High cholesterol
    • Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD)
    • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
    • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
    • Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)
