Healthcare begins close to home, where you can get regular, ongoing care and attention from a primary care physician. Primary care can be obtained through pediatricians, OB/GYNs, internal medicine doctors or family physicians. Family medicine—the type of primary care practiced through Columbus Regional Health—is more all-encompassing. Family medicine goes beyond the scope of care you receive through other practices.
Family medicine has been a recognized specialty for more than 45 years. Family medicine doctors treat general illnesses and ongoing health issues such as heart disease, kidney problems, depression and more. They are trained to provide a full scope of care for patients of any age–from newborns to the elderly. Because family medicine physicians have a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of your medical conditions, your social history and your family, they can provide care that integrates behavioral medicine and preventive care.
Generally speaking, family medicine doctors function as the central hub for a patient’s care, meaning they care for the entire patient and not just one organ system. Our Family Medicine Center does this and more. As a patient-centered medical home—a designation that goes to only a select number of primary care practices—the Family Medicine Center uses an intentional, comprehensive approach that involves the patient, their family or loved ones, the physician and the healthcare team.
The National Committee for Quality Assurance has certified the Family Medicine Center as a Level 3 patient home—the highest level available— which means we’re meeting high expectations with regard to 173 different patient-centered factors.
Unlike many general practices, Columbus Regional Medical Group primary care physicians still perform rounds. If you are admitted to Midtown Medical Center, you’ll be seen by your own Family Medicine Center doctor.
As a teaching hospital, Columbus Regional Health trains the next generation of doctors through our Family Medicine Residency Program. Our commitment to be current in the practices and protocols we employ means you can be sure you’re getting an exceptional level of care.
Family medicine provides a full scope of care for entire families, regardless of age. Columbus Regional Medical Group family medicine doctors are experienced with multiple years of specialized training, so they can treat your chronic and occasional health issues and provide preventive care that integrates behavioral health.
